Floating PV: Oportunity for energy transition and protection of water resources
The installation of solar panels on water surfaces has several advantages, including the use of surfaces that are not normally used in other areas. On the one hand, floating photovoltaic panels reduce the evaporation of water by using solar radiation, while the water has a cooling effect on the panels. This effect contributes to a better performance of the solar panels even during very hot seasons, which increases the efficiency of the panels.
While more and more countries are installing floating PV systems the experiences show several benefits such as a higher elecrticity generation, less water evaporation and better water quality, keeping the land available for other uses and reducing visual impacts.
In order to promote this emerging technology, GIZ Chile and Fraunhofer Chile organized a webinar in the framework of the Energy Partnership Chile Germany in which floating solar power plant systems were discussed as an opportunity for Chile. The topic was introduced through international experiences, requirements, financing possibilities and regulatory frameworks, exemplifying opportunities to use floating power generation in Chile as well. Together with the National Irrigation Commission, INSIGENERE and GIZ Brasil
The contents thus reflect a good basis to be able to promote related projects in Chile:
Contents:
- The floating PV concept and research results in Chile (Fraunhofer Chile).
- Financing for floating systems, barriers and regulation (Comision Nacional de Riego)
- Projects in Chile (ISIGENERE, Solarity)
- International experience Brazil (GIZ Brazil, Multiconsult)
