21st Roundtable Energy Partnership - B2G ‘Biogas: Challenges and Opportunities for the Energy Transition"
On October 21, 2025, the B2G Roundtable “Biogas: Challenges and Opportunities for the Energy Transition” took place within the framework of the Energy Partnership Chile–Germany, implemented by GIZ.
The event brought together representatives from the public and private, who shared experiences, progress, and perspectives on the development of biogas as a key solution for energy transition, circular economy, and methane emissions mitigation in Chile.
Program
🌱 Michael Schmidt, from the Energy Partnership Chile–Germany – GIZ, and Annika Schüttler, Project Leader at the German–Chilean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Chile), opened the session by highlighting the importance of strengthening cooperation between Chile and Germany to promote innovative and sustainable energy technologies.
⚡ Christian Malebrán, from the Biofuels and Bioenergy Unit of the Ministry of Energy, presented “Biogas within the framework of a Bioenergy Strategy”, addressing regulatory progress and the opportunities offered by the forthcoming National Bioenergy Strategy for energy recovery from waste and emissions reduction.
♻️ Álvaro Ríos, from the Ministry of the Environment, presented “Circular Economy and the Organic Waste Agenda”, outlining key public policy instruments that promote source separation. Nearly 50% of household waste consists of organic matter, whose recovery through composting and anaerobic digestion is included in the National Organic Waste Strategy (ENRO) and the Bill on the Differentiated Management of Organic Waste.
🔬 Dr. Felipe Kaiser, CTO of Genera4, presented “Biogas: The Multi-Talent Technology”, emphasizing the versatility of this renewable source to produce electricity, heat, biomethane, and green hydrogen, as well as the use of digestateas an organic fertilizer.
⚙️ Daniela Espinoza, General Manager of AChBIOM AG, shared the perspective of the Chilean Biogas and Biomass Association, highlighting the sector’s potential to strengthen local circular economy models, foster technological innovation, and contribute to decarbonization goals.
🇩🇪 Marc Reinhard, from the German Biogas Association (Fachverband Biogas e.V.), presented “Biogas in Germany – Towards a Circular Economy”, sharing Germany’s experience in developing around 10,000 biogas plants with a total capacity of 6 GW, the integration of biomethane into the energy matrix and mobility, and its contribution to emission reduction and green job creation.
🌞 The event reaffirmed the value of biogas as a strategic tool to drive a sustainable and circular energy transition, strengthening technical cooperation between Chile and Germany in the field of renewable energy.
This event was organized by the Energy Partnership Chile–Germany, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy of Chile, and implemented by GIZ, in cooperation with AHK Chile.
